Going 1x11 on an GT sts....

Dirt Disciple
Hello.
Would it be possible to go
1x11 on a GT sts ?
I'm wanting to keep the bike but go a bit more modern on the drive train.
Many thanks.

Re:

Technically I can't see it being a problem. Would probably be better sticking to Shimano drivetrain though, as I don't think that SRAM XD freehubs work well clearance wise on 135mm hubs.
Only issue I see is dependant on the front ring size you use. My STS pedals well in the middle ring but bobs and bounces a lot more in the granny. Chainring sizes are generally a lot smaller on 1x set ups, so pedalling performance may be compromised.

Re:

I think you'll be fine. Most 1x set ups use a ring the equivalent of what would be your current middle ring or thereabouts. If I were doing it, I'd lose the front mech tube and replace with something less 'there' to blank it off.

Re:

I ran a 1x10 sram setup on my 96 santa cruz heckler. The biggest challenge was getting the chain length just right. The were many chain drops in the beginning.

Re:

Not having the granny ring will also prevent the chain rubbing the stay on the really low gears too. Win, win.
