is it possible to cut down a threaded steerer and then use it with an ahead type stem. i seem to remember reading somewhere that the walls on a threaded steerer are thinner ?

Not sure as there is a clear cut answer to this, it'd depend on the fork.
What threaded fork are you looking to run ahead?

As long as NOS-isity isn't important you can pick MAGs up for peanuts. Just bought a pair off stw myself for a tenner. I'm only after a black mag/quadra brace so maybe we can come to some sort of convoluted swap deal.
PM me if interested.
