Ive a set of knackered M730 XT cantis(polished silver ones)that need new springs, plastic collars and various little bits.In the past I have owned LX,DX and 400LX equipped bikes of that era(90-92),all of these had cantis that were visually identical to XT,are the parts interchangeable?

Yes, just make sure you get the 'SLR' type so you can adjust the tension properly but non SLR will fit too.

*if you can find some, Tekro RPB cantilevers have some lovely brass fittings that work better than Shimano originals

Lgf got there before me!! I was going to also say that there are two settings... Slr or normal,am I right in saying, slr gives you more tension than normal! All this reminds me my m800 Dale force 40 front brake needs setting properly
Happy new year to you both

Just today sort 2 sets of knackered M730 XT brakes out (don't ask, phew), and I found the springs from M650/651 sets are too "fat" won't fit properly into the brake body hole. But springs from MT60 wider types (not low-profile bodies) did fit (strangely).

If you slightly enlarged the brake body holes to enable the M650 springs to fit would the holes be too large to accommodate the originals?

Yeah, sure, it would fit because the difference is like 0,1 mm or so, but I hadn't had the nerve to tinker around
