Changing chain ring bolts this morning, one on the backs to the outer chain ring bolt fell out and rolled under a shelf. That in itself is a pain in the arris, but the thing that baffles me is... Why the fook if it dropped out, will the replacement not clear the teeth on the middle ring and go in!!

Your mistake here was to be doing bike repairs in a relatively tidy environment. (I imagine).
Had the place been a shambles it's likely the chainring bolt would have been prevented from rolling under the shelf by any number of different objects strewn about the floor. What's more, there may have been a spare bolt on the floor that you could have picked up to use instead.

Remember, cleanliness is next to ungodliness.

The upside was I didn't lose any skin off my knuckles in the bolt swap... which is nice.
