So, its 1986, oatmeal jumpers rule, Telly Addicts is on and Branson's Virgin Atlantic Challenger II has just beaten the record...

What do you go into the LBS for after drooling over 'stuff' in the latest issue of Cycle Fanciers Monthly?

Seatpost is 27.2mm

Frame is a Welsh built Reynolds with a 1" bi-plane fork.

With an unlimited budget, what would you have fitted at the time?

Try not to mention XT M700 Deerhead - been there, done that, got the t-shirt!

Re:

Or maybe you wanted a Retrobike and harked back to the old fashioned 650b setups.

Suntour is your only real alternative, mountech or XC, so XC as money aint a problem.
Bullnose bars of every type and looking at the futuristic BAT system (or was the a year or two later)?

Price no object?

WTB holey rollers front and rear, Classic Hubs, FASP. IRD bar, stem. Ground Control tires. T2 fork. CBR cranks. Triton pedals. CK headset. Odi Mushroom grips. Suntour drivetrain (your request), Unicanitor saddle.

All era to 1986 of course.

Find all that, get it on your bike and it will look and ride fantastic.

Re:

I agree with FluffyChicken : Suntour is an alternative : my 1986 C'dale SM700 is built with Suntour XC mechts and Thumbshifters. Brakes are Suntour with Dia Compe levers and crankset is Specialized / Sugino.

Mavic made a full MTB wheel set in 1984, so it's possible to built wheels with Mavic Road hubs and MA40 rims but without Paris Gao Dakar decals. Perhaps some BMX or track hubs like Bullseyes or Phil Wood but for a terrible price.
For the crankset : go to Spécialités TA and some old Mafac for brakes with Dia Compe or Magura levers…
:D
