Am I correct in saying an 8 speed rear cassette won't fit a 7 speed hub?
what other pitfalls will there be ?frame spacing??
The bike is an old marin bear valley..

No worries about frame spacing if your frame is already 135mm at the back wheel. If it is 130mm, a bit of jiggling will be required.

There are no other pitfalls. Any Shimano rear mech from around 1986/7 onward will do 8spd as the cable pull is the same - you'll just need to adjust the cable stops to suit.

You can, if confident enough, even swap out the existing freehub body and replace it with the 8spd version but you'll have to re-dish the wheel and adjust the spacers on the axle.

Modern hubs are still quite cheap and with a bit of experimentation, they can be a straight swap, even using later seals on older parts.

Then you can go 8,9, 10 spd

7spd chains can still be used and 9spd work just as well. no change is required for the chainset or front mech
