The frame being Tange Prestige, and coming with Deore LX, I would not call it "low end", despite the fork that might have been added afterwards.
@westiephish, it would help if you post a picture of the bike from the transmission side (kind of a golden rule for bike pictures to properly asses model and value).

Generic nikel-plated Tange? Made in the far-east and shipped over by Merlin (Lancashire) or a.n.other bike shop is my guess.
