Was looking at my bikes and pending projects and thinking about a unicorn Id like to own one day......it dawned on me that most of my bikes are from 1992! all steel with suntour xc pro, XT and I think it was the first year of XTR m900

whats the consensus out there for the 'classic year' of mountain biking and why?

Any year that mtb's were made is I good year imo.

Each year has its merits, but my favourites are 90-94, simply because that's when I was a "yoof" and really got into mtb's. Plus new ideas were still being trialled (remember "Suspension"?), and some crazy bikes came out, the likes of which we may never ser again.

Re:

1992/3 for me, before Shimano spoiled the look of their group sets and manufactures forgot about rigid to chase suss and full suss.

Re:

For me it would have to be 1988/89 and the bikes by Joe Murray like the 88 Pine Mountain i dreamed of owning (still do) and then the splatter paint Konas of 89. Also loads of manufacturers used to put complete XT groupsets on there bikes all the time not like nowadays.
