Re:

Hello and welcome.

Post up some pictures or some more details of what components your bike has and there will be plenty of people on here who can give you some very good advice.
The good news is that there are lots of parts which are still readily available which should be ale to get your bike up and running again.

Also, whereabouts are you? There may be a few Retrobikers local to you who can help you out.

Re:

thanks for the reply hopefully the pictures work its a mix of lx and stx its pretty much as it came out of the factory so to speak. im unsure of the chain set its mainly the outside ring and chain which are worn the rest altho original look in ok condition is the outer ring replaceable on its own

They look like standard "compact MTB" size rings. Probably tooth sizes of 22/32/42 and BCD of 58mm for the granny and 94mm for the two outer rings. Should be plenty around on here or ebay :)

Complete drivetrain refresh:

Acera chainset, square taper with 42/32/22 rings, £28
http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/article/shim ... GwodqLwILQ

Acera cassette, 12-28, £10
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... -prod38302

SRAM PC830 QuickLink chain, £5
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/sram ... -prod26313

Replacing the chainset with a 4-arm one will make it easier and cheaper to replace chainrings in the future. You might need to check what width axle bottom bracket you have on there as the chainset above needs a 122mm one. A replacement is only £9 if you do though. Jockey wheels on the rear mech look like they just need a clean. New shifter cable inners and you're done!

Re:

Personally, I'd spend a bit more than to get some decent, longer lasting kit. The modern Acera stuff is pretty horrible.

Re:

The problem is that it's only got a 7sp freehub, so to put nicer kit on it you'd be looking at changing that to 8/9/10sp - either by changing the freehub, re-dishing the wheel and re-spacing the axle, or buying new wheels - orders of magnitude more hassle/cost.

Pretty sure the Acera chainset is no worse that what's on there currently, and according to the 1997 catalogue the cassette is an IG50, to the Acera's HG50. Chap says he's already bought a new Clockwork 29er; just trying to help him locate new parts to get the Kona up and running as quickly and easily as possible
