KONA experts wanted...

Max in Montreal

Dirt Disciple
Hello everyone, this is my first post...

Over 20 years ago I purchased this bike second hand. I believe it to be a KONA, but I wish i knew the model and year.

Serial number seems to be F108491X where the X might be a 2...

From memory I'd say it's a 92 Kona. The separate seatpost clamp and plastic dog collar are the indicators for me

Re:

And F1 means 1991 if my memory serves me right, 08 the month of August so a 92 model would be right.

Re:

ok so it is a 1992...now looking at the catalog...

i have an
impact headset
XT top mount shifters
XT rear derailleur
it has the horse shoe on the rear
Ukai um-17 rims
joe's clips

ritchy logic brake levers...this throws me off

From the parts it looks like an explosif :D ...from the paint under the yellow it looks like fire mountain...

Explosifs had an option for custom paint - a green one has come up here before.
I'll compare the serial with my FM when I get it back from the bike shop if it's any help.

Re:

Dont think its and Explosif as the seattube flattens where it meets the bottom bracket. Tange tubing on the explosif flared out. Could be a Cindercone or below I think.

Re:

The F in the serial number is for Fairly Bicycle company in Taiwan, which Kona uses to produce many of it's models.

Is the impact headset a 1" or 1 1/8" size?

IF the bike follows the catalog ( a big IF ) and hasn't had lots of parts changing then the only bike in 1992 with Ukai rims and XT thumb shifters is the Explosif.

What are the cranks and bottom bracket? Or are they not original?

Re:

Years ago I changed the bottom bracket...as for the cranks...not too sure but believe it to be LX...

But what about that seat tube? it does flare out...or squish in depending on how you look at it... as for the head size... not too sure...
