It will not, and to further complicate matters not all 7 speed will work either as there was MD and non-MD variations. Essentially there are several freehub body lengths, and cassettes were designed so that 7 speed had a single sprocket lock ring and 8 speed had a double sprocket lock ring.
Cassette spline lengths:
6 speed = 23.7mm
7 speed = 26.1mm
8 speed = 30.8mm
Non MD lengths:
7 speed MD = 20.7mm
8 speed MD = 25.4mm
