I purchased this bike for the cranks mainly, it was poorly advertised on ebay as a "specialized mountain bike". On picking it up it became clear it had been resprayed and the decals were not original.

Can any one ID this frame?
The klein-esque respray was i think over an original colour of red. The frame number is M2B2 A (i think) 9226 then a second line with BI0196SP

The seat post was an old specialised one. which supports the new decals.

Next up, any one ID the forks?

Frame is a specialized, it has direct drive stays and the typical dropout hole

here's another for comparison, look at the stays and drop outs and mudguard eyelets:

Those are definitely Specialized dropouts, and the stay profiles are right. My guess is a mid-late nineties (steel) Rockhopper. Got a picture of the seat cluster? Headset size? Seatpost size?

Any way to identify which model etc.

The build kit is fairly good stuff. XT/XTR/cooks/hope wheels etc. So im wandering if the frame is any good.
Also the shocks are completly collapsed, is it worth restoring them or just binning in favour of something else.

I think the rack mounts at the top of the seat stays are inthe wrong place for a RHopper, also the directdrive stays are more pronounced on this one and the dropout is far sharper. I'd say stumpie, from early 90s, 92/93. The parts sort of back that up: xtr m900 headset, cooks-all good stuff that fits with timelines and level of frame.

As far as the forks, you'll need a new brace as yours is broken, and a full strip down, service and a whole heap of parts. To be honest you'll get a better set of the bay for cheaper!

Jerky,

Just to add my two cents. I have a 1993 steel Stumpjumper with the same dropout configuration with the same hollow triangle shape. The cable stops on the frame are in the same place as on your mystery frame. Also, my frame has a little pasta tube rear brake guide that runs along the left side of the the top of the seat tube.

Cheers,

Brooks
