How to identify a Shimano hub

Hi guys, just wondering how you actually identify a Shimano hub. Where is the M number? I have a rear wheel that I think I want to sell on here, but want to be sure of the hub model before advertising. It is one of the parralax ones, but the sticker that normally goes around the middle has come off.
 
I've always found the best way to identify a Shimano freehub is, if it takes half a crank revolution before it engages then it's a Shimano :twisted:

The part number's on the sticker!

Some hubs have part numbers elsewhere (on the dustcap, for example) but most parallax hubs have it on the sticker and (as far as I know) nowhere else.

There are some differences in finish and the form of the freehub body between the different models. Cheaper ones have more obvious milling. XT has that pressed-on aluminium ring around the base of the splines. Any pics?
 
It's defo an XT, but I think later than M737 due to the skewer, but that's all. I can do a pic but I reckon the M738 and M739 look the same without stickers don't they?

Was there a 739?

The M737 and 738 front hubs were quite different inside. The 737 had an ordinary 9mm steel axle, while the 738 had an 11mm aluminium axle. Without taking them apart, you can spot the 738 because the end caps / lock nuts are shiny, while the 737's are black.

At the rear I think the M737 (shiny with a sticker) became the M750 (matt with a transfer).

mmm had a bit of a search, and found some conflicting info, so still a little confused.

I have just sold a set of M737's, and am pretty sure this is a little different, but not 100%.

What's the conflicting information? Maybe we can figure it out.

Is this a front or a rear?
 
it's a rear. The conflicting info is on another site to the one you gave me a link to, where in one year they refer to a M738 rear, but then revert back to 737 in later years :?
 
Ok, I've sussed it, looking at René's site, it is an FH M737 A (1995), slightly lighter and a different quick release. Cheers for your help. :D

Interesting. I've got a couple here I bought in the late nineties and they're just marked FH-M737, no A. There are diagrams of the 737 and 737A here:

Most of the parts are identical.

There's a 738 and a 738A listed here in '94 and '95 but then they disappear.
