Just picked these forks up for a 80's mt bike i'm slowly gathering parts for.

Looking them over last night I noticed that the brake bosses are rotated 180 degrees from a normal canti position.

What's up with these bosses, anybody seen these before?

Crap quality control would be my guess!
You'll need a brake with the spring holder included (like the old onza ho). Or get a pair of springs and modify them.

Okay mystery solved, I think.

Searched various topics and now i'm thinking these bosses were designed for the ultra wide cantis from the early-mid 80's, like the Dia-Compe's 980's.

Found this picture from a Miyata:

You mean "not low profile" cantis?

My current high profile cantis use the holes in the bosses for the springs, so did the ones I used in the 80s and 90s.

I think that brake you've shown there ^^^^^ is broken, there is no straddle wire, yet it still hasn't flopped down. As there is no spring tension........

Yep, no springs on those brakes, nor are they the super wide profile 980's. Just posted the pic for the brake boss reference.

I wonder if you could just flip the springs in 980's to work on the outside tension holes? I have a set and will check.
