I had exactly the same problem recently! Just used small spanner (6mm?) on the fork stud.

With the right spanner this will come off in 2 seconds. I have the spanner somewhere if you can not get it off.

Much appreciated but there's no flat spot on the stud to get any purchase on

are you sure? there usually is ans it looks like there is in the pic, if not how was it screwed into the fork? weird :shock:

I think the flat spot you are thinking of is inside the v brake bore :-(
