Well my son and I tackled the job today:

We fitted the tyre on the rim then mounted the wheel on a frame with adequate clearance.

We inverted the frame so my son could turn the wheel using the pedals to ensure an even shave.

I fitted a metal grinding disc to a small angle grinder then as he rotated the wheel I fired up the grinder and alternating from side to side removed the over agressive side lugs from the tyre. I stopped frequently to measure up to ensure even surplus removal. A couple of trial fits to the required frame and the job was done.

Very easy and straight forward - thank you for the advice.

I have done this for my Dawes tandem, which is very narrow at the back.

You need a fresh stanley knife, tyre inflated to 90psi and a saucer of water.

Keep the knife blade wet and it will cut the rubber no problem. I shaved the side of a WTB Velociraptor to fit. Let me know if you want pictures.
