I have heard that these are not compatible......did they make a few that were???

With what? Shimano r mech? No they aren't.

They are only compatible with SRAM mechs that have the 1:1 cable actuation ratio.
The older SRAM mechs that say 'ESP' will work as do most of the modern ones including X5, X7, X9 and X0.

They wont work with any Shimano mechs or any of the Sachs mechs that were around at the same time as SRAM ESP. I mention this because SRAM took over Sachs in about 1996 and continued to use the brand for a couple of years alongside the SRAM and Gripshift brands.
At the time the SRAM shifters were only compatible with SRAM mechs, while Sachs mechs, despite having their own dedicated Gripshift style 'Wavey' shifters, was also compatible with all the Shimano trigger shifters.

EDIT: I notice that the instructions in your photo mention Shimano XTR, XT, LX and STX 8 speed. I'm intrigued to see what it says...
It appears to be talking about compatible hubs and chains rather than mechs though.
