...is road gearing SIS indexing the same spacing as a mountain bike?

The reason I ask is I am building a drop-bar mountain bike for someone and I've just bought some 21-speed stem-mount shifters then suddenly wondered if they are the same?

Told you it was a dumb question but I've been parked up in Guildford for the past six hours and I think my brain has atrophied!

Yes, the spacing is the same, 5 mm for old 7 speed Shimano.

Part way down this page is a nice table that should answer all of your questions :)

I am currently running a road cassette on my Kona with 9-speed XT shifters.

Thanks again...8)

That's two drop-bar mountain bikes I have on the go now; the Cinder Cone in my sig. below is heading that way, and the CB will be too, which is two more than I've ever done to date!
