here's a couple of links to get you started.

Trek 8000 Fixie disc conversion. (note no welding needed if you are just going single speed)

- looks like the guy got away without a chain tensioner - which is sometimes required if single-speeding a bike with vertical drop outs. A lot of bike designed for singlespeeding have horizontal dropouts rather than the vertical ones commonly found on MTB's - this allows you to tension the chain by moving the back wheel forwards or backwards.
The important things about a single speeder is a single speed rear wheel. The rest can be standard or you can do things like get a specific single speed crankset.
