1997 Trek Y3

Hi All I am new here and could use some advice please.

A very good friend of mine has sold his house and is moving in with a lady friend in a small house with very little space.

In his garage was two bikes. A 1998 Marin Mount Vision FRS which I have purchased for my wife, and a 1997 Trek Y3.

Both of these bikes were purchased new and have been ridden hardly at all, they still have the original tyres and those tyres still have moulding nobbles, I cannot stress highly enough how little use these bikes have had.

As I said I have purchased the Marin for my wife however he would like to sell the TREK Y3

There are a few minor chips and marks, from transportation and storage but not enough to detract from its original condition, this bike would really suit a collector, are there collectors who would be interested in such a bike and would this forum be a good place to sell such a bike?

The saddle was changed for a Gel one, the fittings for a speedometer have been added, and it comes with a pair of Trek lights, bought new with the bike. I also know that he had clip in pedals fitted when it was new but he did not get on with them, so I am not sure if the pedals that are on it are originals? Just looking at Bikipedia it looks like it had toe clips, I also have a pair of toe clip pedals that came from his garage so could be the originals from this bike.

Any advice regarding value or how and where to sell this bike would be appreciated.

The trek is in good condition judging by the pics. As far as collectability goes it was mid range back then and not very sought after as it was a small jump price wise to the y11. The urt design as most will tell you was a bit of a fail especially when the horst link came out on the gt and showed us all what a suspension system is capable of. Time shows this as the urt is left to the budget brands these days but the horst is still used on even top end downhillers. This means it is only really collectable to a select few and where that statement is obvious those select few will still see it as not very collectable if that makes sense. That said value wise you need to ask in the how much is my xyz worth part of the forum but I've seen y11's go for around the 200 mark so I think your friend may be lucky to see 80 quid on a forum or 100 on eBay.
The marin on the other hand. ....... your wife did very well

I think he would be happy with £100 and tbh thats cheaper than a budget new bike, its got to be better than a Halfords entry level bike hasn't it?

As for the Marin, (which is in the same sort of condition, I instantly knew that was the bike to have out of the two, so thats now the wifes bike, and joins my Marin B-17 and my Specialised Allez in the shed

This bike is all original, not refurbished condition.
