freewheels are usually 4.8mm to 5mm spacing depending on cog count so should be fine. I have been running thumbies and a freewheel cassette for quite some time with no noticeable issues except the cheap shimano freewheel is a cheap shimano freewheel.

saw some very nice ones on eBay, regina ones especially,

Just some advice, I'm confused as to the Regina Freewheels, ie. the differences between the various models.
these three?

eg (weight, performance etc)

all designed for road and not mud. 8spd very likely to bend the axle as the load is in the middlewhen compared to a freewheel hub where the load is nearer the end of the axle. That is whey so many cheap bikes have broken axles

This is a perfectly 'adequate' freewheel http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sunrace-7-Spe ... 337716f282

How about this aluminium bodied bad boy then!
