Help with shipping a small item from the US to the UK

Out of interest, I recently purchased a stem from a US seller (not on Ebay) sent via USPS. It's been over a month since the last tracking report in California and I can't get any real help from anybody-seller/Parcelforce/RoyalMail/USPS. Seems to just have vanished.
I think some US sellers are reluctant to send to UK or abroad for these reasons. US Ebay shop sellers may believe they're being scammed when 'we' say our stuff just never arrived.
In the past though I've ordered quite a few things from the US with no problems, only a slight delay in some cases.
If anyone can offer any advise.....
