Retro Newbie
Hi,
I want to replace the worn crank set , chain and cassette on my GT Arrowhead.
Its not going to get used hard but I would like it to last and im on an £80 budget.

Cheers :)

Put an ad in the wanted section mate. For that money you will get plenty of offers. You could easily get something half decent for less than half that.

Not sure of year.

pics of when I picked it up-

Got it cheap and I am tidying it up a little.

I've put new tyres, brakes, stem, seat on it, and polished the rims since the pic.(and taken off the mudguard)

Just need new crank set with a decent smooth gear change.

Yes but if you dont look after them they will break. Chances are actually that they will stop functioning reasonably soon  so i would point you in the direction of a set of pre 2000 marzocchi Z series before they went all fancy and weak.
I shall look for you though im sure youre more than capable of hunting these things down yourself arent you ?

Sorry for the dumb question but,

What is an Ahead steerer?

I think my bike has a 1 1/8th threaded steerer and quill fitting stem so wouldn't that count some of these forks out?

Cheers

Okay I found a chainset I fancy-http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shimano-Alivio-M410-M411-Chainset/dp/B001JLCVMO/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=18XROU35TSGQY&coliid=I1R96S6ZJ2BUN6

I emailed the seller to check compatibility then things started getting confusing because they said
"
"Yes, that chainset would be compatible, but the bottom bracket length may be incorrect as this chainset will probably have a different offset to you current crank. Unfortunately, this can not be assessed until the new crank is offered up to the bike and the chainline is measured."

I have just had a new bottom bracket fitted so I don't want to be swapping that if possible, my bottom bracket is square taper, the distance from the centre of my seat post is 50 mm to the centre chain ring and the distance between my dropouts is about 150mm.

How do I work out if it will fit without buying it first?
