Just wondering which cables people use for their retro builds? I don't really have the money or inclination to search for those NOS cables from BITD but want something that will look smart and do the job.

I always use to use the Gore-Tex/Teflon (can't remember the real name) on my bikes back in the '90s.

For Cable outer I get a load off the reel, from LBS :).

Inner cable I get good ones from LBS or the 'net.

Its regular stuff I try to buy from my lbs so they get my money.

Forever messing about with components so it gets changed sufficiently often anyhow.

I always look for bargains and stock up on inners , I bought some clarks gear inners as below from on-one last year for £0.99 each in their sale , for outer I can't fault shimano ones that are pre lubed and have a good cap with seals at each end for £1.99 each 3 for a bike and usually 1/2 left over for the next ;) they even say shimano SIS on them as per the originals

For brakes I just look for the best deal, I don't spend £££'s , CRC usually have offers and I get a lengh of outer and make sure it's brake specific with good internal seals and structure such as a pre lube, this makes so much difference than just plain old outers with no seals ....

i recently found some NOS Tioga Duro Cable 2.0mm brake cables for my 92 Zaskar. they are perfect for the M730 era XT, that what was supposed to be used, size wise. They make a big difference to the feel of the brakes also...they are much better than modern skinny cables.

for gear cable, i am more than happy with modern and the best stuff shimano makes. outers HAVE to be black though!!

i buy outer for about £1 per meter off the net, and also the cables at about 50p each by buying in bulk.......that way things are cheap, i generally try and keep my retro stuff away from too much gloop, and i prefer the route of regular replacement rather than making an expensive set last past their best due to cost......the plastic and metal ferrules are generally reusable through several replacement cycles.......just out of interest though, i have a set of sealed cables on my modern full susser......i have thrown a world of mud and water at them over the past few years and they are as smooth as the day i first put them on.......
