36h Wheel Building

I'm in the rather lucky position of getting to build some NOS M950 hubs into ceramic 217's. Being 36h, I have every lacing possibility under the sun available, radial, 2 cross, 3 cross, crows foot, 2, 3 or 4 leading and trailing.

The boring side of me says 2 cross at the front, at the rear 3 cross drive, 2 cross drive side.

Any inspiration or thoughts anyone?

Crows foot puts me off because of the cost of buying 2/3 one length and 1/3 another for each side and having loads of spare spokes left over.

3 cross. Simple, Boring, Effective.

Crow's foot

They're wheels. "3 cross. Simple, Boring, Effective." Sounds right!

1 cross front, 2 cross (non drive side)/ 3 cross (drive side) rear. It's what I've done on my Yeti

If you're going to do 1x then just go radial on the front looks nicer and pretty much the same.
I have nothing fancy here though just Radial and 3x front
and a lot of 3x rears
I do also have 2x/3x rear, radial/3x (could be radial/2x I cannot remember)
they all stay straight and all move me forward.

If you're riding smooth flat roads, that is :?

I've been trying out different spoke patterns recently (too much spare time on my hands )

3x is without doubt the most solid, durable, and pretty easy to build, loads of guides on t'net.
Snowflake is almost as easy, never given me any problems either, even with off-road abuse, and does look a bit different.
Radial on the front could be cool, again if done properly I've found no down sides to this pattern.
3Leading 3 Trailing, bit of a bugger to do and by all accounts isn't particularly strong, ok for road use I guess
2 Leading 2 Trailing, you can't do this unless you have 32 hole rims, for 36 hole rims use the one above.
Crows Foot, like you say needs different length spokes, is different and pretty durable though.
1x and 2x, you may as well just go 3x surely??

Personally I'd go for 3x, safe, solid, reliable. If you want to change at a later date then with 3x it's easy enough to turn it into a snowflake pattern, just make sure there's plenty of spoke thread in the nipple and you'll be ok.

I go along with that especially if the bike is a rider. I've only been building wheels for a year so I tend to go the safe and sure route although I've got a pair of rims destined for 'crow's foot' lacing. I've also rebuilt some cheap wheels that were 4x :shock:
