Yes they need part 18 in the diagram. This means the bolt holds part 20 in fixed position (tight against the end of the boss) so the spring can work against it.

Took me a while to figure out how they work when I rebuild my Saracen. It's the complete opposite way around to canti's because the outer end of the spring is fixed in place rather than the inner end poking through a hole next to the boss.

Yeah I figured this....gone with the big cheeses bmx u-brake idea....think it will look cool 8)

Sorry for the naive questions...but do I need the Boss caps to make a U-Brake work? Looking at a BR-MT 61?
