The early ESP were Sachs ones then so many were Sram ESP, they were Shimano 2:1 ratios, (I had all these Esp-9's on my bikes with XTR 8 spd shifters no problems. Then they converted to 1:1 still badged ESP. but the model shape had changed, so was confusing until you got to know which did what. The 1:1 ones had plastic bodies and silver alloy cages.
