are 8 and 9 speed compatible hubs able to accept a 7 speed cassette ? or is the wheels "dishing" in the spokes different ? can i run an 8 speed cassette with 7 speed xt thumbshifters and a xt shortcage rear mech?, basically i need some wheels with a 7 speed cassette but as they are hard to find im wondering if a 8 speed cassette will work, or if im heading for problems ? thanks for your time much appreciated andy

Use an 8-speed cassette and the "magic click". It should work fine.

Yup just use the thumbies with an 8 speed cassette as it has the ability to shift across 8 cogs due to the 'magic' click

I'm running 7 speed thumbies on both my bikes. one is running 8 speed with the phantom click and shifts perfectly, the other is running 9 speed in friction mode and also shifts perfectly.
The trouble with running a 7 speed cassette with a spacer is getting hold of a decent cassette.
at least 8 speed ones are still available at the moment.
