SS - 3/32 chain, 1/8 chainring?!

On my singlespeed... I've got a chainring that I was going to use, but I don't know if it's a 1/8 or 3/32! Clearly a 3/32 chain on a 1/8 chainring is a bad idea, but would it even fit at all? I'm sure it'd break horribly & quickly, but how obvious would the mismatch be to start with... i.e. can I tell if it's a 1/8 ring by trying to put a 3/32 chain on it?!

Currently playing around with sprockets from 3/32 cassettes to get the right ratio, then I'll buy a proper one. Was going to go with 3/32 for everything but I may just get a 1/8 chain, as that'll work with whatever.

it will be obvious, a 3/32 chain won't fit a 1/8 ring, I've tried it on my BMX.

As in won't-go-on-at-all, or just will-be-a-bit-tighter/noisier-than-usual? Cheers :)
