I don't know.
The first bike was named SM, SR, ST. M for mountain, R for road, T for Touring. The S? I don't know.
They stop the S in 1992 : for exemple, the SM2000 became the M2000.

For the S : perhaps for "series" : the frame of your C'dale is a "3.0 series"

I've got the answer for the "S" : S as "sport"
SM : sport mountain, ST : sport touring, SR sport road…
I saw the answer on the cover of the first bike built by cannondale (1983) : the SR 300 Sport Touring… there
