What was the idea behind them? From what I know:
1) Allows for shorter "tucked in stays" helped climbing
2) Chain doesnt need to be broken.
3) err thats it.

Definately a YES from me! Yeti Ultimate has to be the best example out there IMO.
One thing to note though - some manucturers used the frame design to follow the trend (early 90's) of getting the chainstays as short as possible. It helped with climbing for sure but descending became very skittish on some - again my opinion only.
