why has shaft driven never taken off for single speeding? Also would it be that difficult to set up some sort of gearing at the BB end to make it multi-geared?

does the shaft drive run up the inside of the chainstay?

Well, it's been around a couple of decades, but so far never took off. It's a bit like the motorcycles by BMW: don't they use a shaft as well? I don't see why it wouldn't work on a bike, but maybe it has to do with weight and maintenance.

Shaft drive bicycles have been around for 100 years or more. During that period there have always been a few on the market.

Although they offer some advantages in simplicity and cleanliness, there is one decided disadvantage.

A chain drive is the most efficient power transfer known. A shaft drive requires the power to be turned through a right angle twice, with a resulting loss of efficiency.

The competitive nature of cycling revealed that these bikes could not be made to go as fast as chain drive bikes, so their market is limited to those who don't mind a slower bike in exchange for keeping grease off their hands.

think they are aimed more at the "yuppie" market , sort of a fashion accessory

the cleanliness of the non chain drive being one of the selling points

you'd think they's use them on downhill bikes where chains/rings/cogs etc just get in the way and pedalling efficiency and/or weight aren't the highest priority?
