Arrrrgh ebay!

Top pull or bottom pull - please correct me if needed before I moan to the seller....

Just bought a bottom pull 31.8 front mech off the bay, but to me it is a top pull - the cable pulls the lever from the top and the derailler moves out and up. Can I have got it wrong?

My old one pulls from the bottom, also how can I tell if it is for compact drive only - model number perhaps?

Look out for this one in the for sale section soon.... Shimano XT FD-M737 - Probably top pull, Definately 31.8 collar

Home work for tomorrow :)

If you look from the rear:

A downswing derailleur (High clamp)
The cable-clamp bolt on the right side (drive side) = Toppull
The cable-clamp bolt on the left side = Downpull

A topswing derailleur
The cable-clamp bolt on the right side (drive side) = Downpull
The cable-clamp bolt on the left side = Toppulll

This is a XT 739 front Toppull (topswing- bolt left)

The XT 737 is available in (as far as I know) top and downpull
This is the downpull (downswing - bolt left)

And this again the XT 737 toppull (downswing and bolt right)

But.... the newer front derailleurs have a dual pull. But that is a different story I'll tell you guys next week. Now it's time for bed and good night.
