Hi it's me again
Uhm... well, I had just started stripping my S-bike frame. Took the rear end off, took all the parts off, found out that the Rock Shox MAG-21 was even still 1 1/4" (yay! my first)
And now comes the hard part... the BB. It has to come out for me to have the front part powdercoated in red. Problem is, it's a cartridge BB from shimano. Dunno if it's a UN72 or something, but it's square tapered, and you have to put in the non-drive side first and after that the cartridge with BB and bearings (they are one piece).
PROBLEM: The "cup" from the non-drive side is a plastic one and there ain't no "teath" (you know, where the tool grips in to get it out or in) left. Probably some *^&%#)^! has tried getting it out and broke off the teath.
Took the frame to 2 bike shops to ask for help... first guy didn't even know what frame it was (he thought it was some bike from Halfords and it would not even be worth getting the BB out in the first place). He tried reluctandly and after messing around with the BB tool on the none drive side his conclusion was "Yep mate, you're right... there ain't no teath left". Second bike shop also kinda told me I would never get that BB out.
I have heard from someone "in the olden dayz" who once told me you could also tap out those cartridge BBs from Shimano. Because they are actually like loose bearings in a metal casing that screws into the BB shell... anyone have any thoughts about this? Or could I just take it out from the drive side (they tried that but their tool snapped out).
I really need to get that BB out. Would hate to see my lovely S-bike go away just because some idiot wasn't careful on a piece of plastic
