as the one pictured is steel that is quite a difficult thing to do! Are you sure they werent the aluminium versions that cracked when someone sneezed?

I've had (& have) a lot of e-stays but my Unicorn & IMO, the most beautiful MTB ever made is the Mantis Valkyrie EC:
