Advice: Shimano XTR M 900 drive chain

Hi I’ve got some early front and rear XTR derailleur mechanisms, M900 series. Can anyone let me know what chain and cassette I should use with these? Would HG stuff suit?

Now to the next question. I think I need a new 2nd chain ring with 5 holes. Any ideas where I could get one?

Re:

Howdy - while the Shimano HG-90 chain was the correct match for those bits, any good quality 8 spd chain will work fine. As far as clusters are concerned, an m-900 unit, again, would be the one to find (ie: 11 - 28, 12 - 32 tooth gears), along with an (m-900) SC-X middle chain-ring (number of teeth depend on your existing biggest and smallest rings - generally one goes 26/36/46 or 28/38/4:cool: ... and these can often be found offered for sale for fairly fair prices in the 'for sale' forum on this site; or - you can pay the generally higher prices for the bits off of e-bay.

That said, again any good quality 5-hole matching bolt patterned chain-ring (made for a triple crank-set) of the suitable size should work?

If you are in the UK, Spa cycles do 110bcd chainrings

Any Shimano cassette for 8 spd will do

any chain from any manufacturer designed for 7/8/9 speed will do
