On the money...in fact I'm tempted to buy them to replace the ones I stupidly sold when I took my Ranger to bits years ago (the frame is still hanging up). Hopefully the OP will press buy it now before I do.

No, you go for it. I've got my head set on Nitto Bullmoose bars from PlanetX

Have a look at the bullmoose bars fitted to the Ridgeback 501 on pages 2 and 3 of topic ' Show us your ......Ridgeback '
The bike is from 1986 , and the bars are Nitto and remain at standard width

They would look great on the Ranger !

It's an awkward angle to view the bars, but they look pretty neat and the bike is superb. I presume you're looking to sell the bars?

Re:

Sorry , poorly worded reply !

I was trying to say that a set of bullmoose bars would look good on your Ranger

It took me over 2 years to find the bars on the Ridgeback . They came from a guy
in Boise , Idaho USA , who also happened to have the Shimano shifters . The
NOS brake levers came from Norway

So you can see that there is no way that I would split/sell any parts from the Ridgeback

If you want more information on the original Ranger components let me know and I will
check the reviews in ' Making Tracks ' magazine , in my opinion the bike is early/interesting
enough to at least be given some period correct components ( even if they are upgrades )

Re: Dawes Ranger - Respray & new build

Just a few pics from the Dawes Ranger rebuild process. Painfully slow due to other commitments. Had this on the backburner for quite a while now.

Re: Dawes Ranger - Respray & new build

Looking good. Levers look a bit out of place next to thumbies.

Re: Dawes Ranger - Respray & new build

Sorry but that chainset will flex like a goodun! or a flexy thing. Look for the older Sugino cranks found on Muddy Foxes of the era, they are really stiff.

Well, you obviously speak from experience. But I have exact same chainset on an old MTB I actually use quite a lot, and can't say I've noticed anything particularly flexy about it, it's gotten me over the Chilterns a few times.

Re: Dawes Ranger - Respray & new build

Finally getting near to finishing this build after a couple of years! Only really been concentrating on it over the past 3 or 4 months. And what problems I've had with it.

1. Ordered some lovely Nitto Bulmoose handlebars from Planet X, but for some reason they would only slide a third of the way into fork riser before stopping. Eventually had to resort to slowly filing the stem fitting to narrow it and then chopping six inches off it in order to get bars low enough. The headtube appears to be slightly narrower in the middle, there were no blockages.

2. The goddamn brake braze-ons seem to have been placed about 2 or 3mm too high, tried 3 different sets of cantilever brakes, and they all (at the lowest possible position) had the brake blocks set a smidgen too high on the 26" rims and rubbing against the tyres. Finally found some black Shimano Deore ones that (just about) missed the tyres and seem to work but the clearance is very, very tight on fully inflated 2" tyres.

3. The rear hub was about 2mm to wide to comfortably fit into the drop outs without some serious leverage. Spent a couple of weeks slowly trying to cold set the drop outs, but they wouldn't budge, just snapped back to the same width whatever method I used (and I googled all the methods). Eventually bit the bullet and disassembled the whole hub and by mixing out various washer sizes managed to lose a couple of mm on the axle width without it poking out of the dropouts.

4. Finally, all is done. Except every chain I have is too short - the rear chain stays are really, really flipping long, they go on for ever. Just have to buy a new chain. Then I'll stick some pictures up.

Re: Dawes Ranger - Respray & new build - FINISHED AT LAST!

Been ages getting this done. I've been restoring for the last 18 months beginning with a complete respray and lug lining from Rourke Cycles at Blue Whippet. Been slowly fitting it out on available weekends, and I must say, that despite conventional wisdom I really like the way it rides, it's gorgeously 'cruise-able'. It will never see any dirt tracks, but I just love it as a Sunday afternoon easy rider along the back lanes.
