Kona Kyber?? What Kona is this?

Hi,

Just looking at a local Craig's list and spotted this.

The owner wants to sell cheap and it looks like it has P2 which I could use. Googled Kona Kyber and couldn't find anything.

Couldn't tell you exactly what EU or US model is the same name but it looks like a 2000-2001 decal set. If you can figure out what tubing decals it has (if any)you can probably make a good assumption as to what the common equivalent would be.

It looks quite similar to a 2000 Kilauea, but I don't think it can be one as it has rack eyes on the dropouts.

I did a search on google japan and found this photostream, it should be enough for Anthony to determine the model.

It has ritchey drop outs if that helps, but the forks dont look to be the triple butted versions

The hooded Ritchey dropouts on the Adam Taber frame are the same as they used on the 2000 Kilauea. Maybe the rack on the Craigslist bike isn't actually attached to the dropout. Beyond saying that it looks a lot like a 2000 Kilauea, I still don't know what the frame is, but they wouldn't spec those dropouts for a low-end model.

That rack looks like it's P-clipped to the stays to me.

We can't ask him now, but I'm not sure what Anthony is referring to with regards to a 2000 Kilauea. I am not aware of one, and thought that the Mustard 1998 Reynolds 631 was the last of that name until it was resurrected for the 2010 Carbon Kilauea, which I have an example of.

The Decals on the Kyber seem to be the genuine 2000 Glow In The Dark version.

The only 2000 model that looks like the Kyber is the Lava Dome, which does have the same Ritchey style Hooded Dropouts. My pictures on file don't highlight the detail very as it is coloured Black.

I have a 2001 Kilauea, was matt black with white and silver decals originally and has the hooded Ritchey dropouts
Was a low volume, reasonably high end doublebutted steel frame (Kona own tubing, not Reynolds or Columbus etc) that they offered due to everything else either being low grade steel, or aluminium at the time
Anthony and Kona themselves (thwy were very helpful if i recall) confirmed this. Maybe worth contacting them direct

Anthony mentioned that the Kyber looks a lot like a 2000 Kilauea, which he said was available as a frame only in 2000 & 2001. Are we thinking that these two Kyber frames could be the same frame as the Kilauea, from 2000/1?
