Personally, I would be tempted to start with giving it a good clean and only replacing the broken shifter/gear cables. From what I can see of it, the groupset might not be worn out and the existing brakes will definitely do the job. That will give you enough to try it out and rekindle any love for it. Then if you don't like the ride, you can pass it on without too much invested.

If you aren't up for doing that yourself, look for a small old school bike shop in your area that focuses on helping people keep their existing bikes on the road than selling brand new ones.

Yes every bike shop so far has just tried to sell me a new one lol. I need to find the old caliper brakes that use the lug on the frame. The front bit and the rear bit don't match so changing gear was always very dicey I remember with this set up. I would like to get the right kit.

For brakes most use V brakes which are considerably better and easier to set up, should you wish to learn.

thanks for the link thats exactly what I need, do you have one for the levers too? and the groupset?. cant quite work out which bit was original and which is added later. The guy I got it from way back had messed around with the front bit and it didnt quite match or change smoothly ever. what original gear shifters would it have had?

can get more pics of the bike shortly if interested. Ive got the rockshox? suspension forks it had fitted as well but I always preferred the original hard ones.

Shouldnt be a prob, but some pics close in with plenty of daylight and well tell you what you need.

Pretty much all shimano deore and above are for V brakes, so there will be plenty of choice at a range of prices, though I wwill say there that better levers do equal better stopping power. But all are adequate for the job.

If you are just getting it working, look for the Avid v brakes and levers, they are pretty cheap and work well.
Though is there any real need for some, as you already have brakes on there.
Some fresh brake blocks and cables may do the trick.

Yes get lots of pictures up.

First stop is clean it all up, most probably works.
See if there is play in the mechs, they should move but not wobble.

Normally new cables and chain do the job after a clean.

You have V-Brakes fitted (hence no point buying any).
It would have had cantilevers, something like BR-M650 and about a tenner/15 quid second hand.

But it depends what else is on there as to what to do.

How handy, willing to be handy, are you with a few tools.

I'm pretty crap at doing this stuff tbh. My main need is to replace the grip shifters as they actually are broken. Split plastic falling off. What should I get? The brakes were probably the ones with the single Central wire that sat in the small lug on the frame. I'm confused is this v brakes?

Or look for some gripshift on ebay or here. If you take the new shifters and the bike to any shop they will be able to fit them for you.
