Coil Springs for Rock Shox Judy Forks

Hi all,
when had been doing one of the 1996 Rock Shox Judy fork restoration I`ve realized a serious fact - missing coil springs on the after-market. It`s really strange that it`s almost impossible - today - to find any of them (right, if you`re lucky enough you may find - from time to time - rare Kronos or White Bros springs, but not too many). Does it seem that the coil springs after-market is currently empty? Well, it might be true. This observation led me to think about custom springs for Judy forks.

During last months I did some measurements and calculations, as well as I got in touch with a local company that regularly produces various coil springs for many engineering deployments. I showed them my blue-print of the springs for Judy forks and they produced a few - experimental - pairs of them in custom production. I decided to use stainless steel wire (that allowed us to keep the wire unprotected by any painting, just for this reason of experiment). To be as close to former after-market products as possible, we`ve made the same number of spring threads and length. I didn`t have precise measurements for spring rates of different weight riders (like "soft", "medium" and "firm"), therefore I firstly decided to make a set of springs for my current rider weight, which is around 73 - 75kg in high season (so I can say "medium" ride firmness). Once a set of custom springs were done, I prepared a blue-print for spring end-caps used to properly match the springs on top of the shafts in the fork. I made it easy from aluminium and it fits perfectly the inner and outer diameter of the springs. Again, due to same reason as above, I kept the end-caps without any painting or anodization, however, when needed, I can make any standard colour anodization.

Well, currently I have 3 pairs of my custom springs for Rock Shox Judy forks. The springs fit perfectly model years of 1995 and 1996 (I would say of 1997 too). I installed one pair of them in my spare 1996 Rock Shox Judy XC fork. Because the wire used to make the springs is a bit thicker, I cut some outer material off from the springs to get them easily into plastic adjuster top-caps. I installed springs together with a 63mm damping cartridge. All works well, but I have to note that additional 2mm plastic shim (e.g. jax connector for elastomers) is required, because the springs are 2mm shorter :facepalm:

I attached some pictures of the springs (see below).

If i still had my '95 Judys i'd take a pair.
This is what RB is all about.
 
Actually both 2 pairs of springs reserved (waiting for confirmation and payment). If anything will change, I will update.
I would say yes, the springs will fit a 1997 Judy DH (but can`t confirm for 100%, because I don`t have any 1997 Judy fork right now).

Hi Peter,

I have the judy xc on a klein bike from the late 1990’s, and the elastomers have disintegrated, I would like to try a pair of these springs, with the firmest possible ride, everything else within the forks seem fine. It’s been a while since you posted this, so you may no longer have these or have perfected the perfect replacement???

Ah yes thanks Steed springs look correct so they’re in my basket just waiting to see if Peter CBB has the stainless equivalent available? Also I’ve attached a link ☝️of another set of springs from the world of eBay, although I can’t see them working (two springs of different sizes and a bit long) unless anyone else has had success with these?

or the other route is suspension corrected forks but klein steerers I think aren’t standard and I’d be opening a can of worms?

thanks for the help and I’m sure I’m not the only person with the expensive retro bike made redundant by some plastic rubber grommets (elastomer).

The ebay springs you referenced would not be an option for your fork. They are too long and the diameter is too wide to fit inside your top cap. Those springs were also designed for longer travel forks so those springs take a longer distance of travel to reach the peak spring rate resulting in your fork feeling soft.

Our Steed Springs are made from Stainless Steel and they are designing specifically for these forks and their shorter travel.
