So folks

I have my very early Clcokwork,

The question is do I restore her paint etc or call if a day

She’s had a disc tab added many years ago ( I thought it was a good idea at the time ) she’s got holes in the chain stays

So I quess to short she need, rear stays and paint

All possible at Bob Jackson’s

But I just don’t know/can’t decided if it’s worth it

I have a quite large connection to her as it was my very first bike that I saved ages for but ??!!

Thoughts please

Re:

I’d get it repaired, disc tab removed and painted, but I wouldn’t be fussed about recreating the original pAint.

First bike, got to keep it!

Re:

....I have a silver c16r 15 inch which is immaculate. This is a bit weird since it has been my winter hack bike for 20 years. It’s got some basic groupset and some upgrades, it’s running original gold Judy’s. It’s been everywhere. Compared to my new bikes it handles like a dog in Singletrack and hefty downhill. But everything works as if by magic - all controls in exactly the right place, it climbs like nothing else. It’s old, out of date, used, abused....I will never part with it. It sits there, glowing with good memories like a childhood photo album.

It’s sentimental and nostalgic ... but if you have the money to repair and the soace to keep it you won’t regret hanging on to it....

Re:

The only person who can decide if it's worth it is you mate. Economically you'll spend far more than it's worth and far more than you will ever recoup but it's your old bike and you'll never get another one.

FWIW I still regret selling my original 1989 Clockwork. I found this site when looking for another a year after I sold mine.

. . .

Agreed. To help make up your mind, you could try a rough calculation of how much it would all cost and then, using the total as an indicator of budget, scan eBay, etc. to see what else you could get for that price. If you find yourself weeping at the thought of infidelity to your trusty old companion, then go for the repair; if you find that your wandering eye is unscrupulously entranced by a new flame, then perhaps it's time to say goodbye to the Clockwork. (However, if you later feel like a faithless weasel, do not expect sympathy! ;) )

Re: Very poorly early Clockwork

Providing you keep the frame dry in the shed, there's no reason why you have to decide now.

I've got a broken titanium frame in the shed which would need a new a head and seat tube if it were ever to be ridden again.

Re: Very poorly early Clockwork

my clockwork was just like yours but holed in the bottom of the seat tube, i welded the holes up and ground them down, now being used as a singlespeed plod about town bike. not worth spending money on.........but it has no sentimental value to me, it was a karma frame from here. but yours.........hmmmm? go for it!

Re: Very poorly early Clockwork

Like others have said, its only you that can make that choice. Asking others what they would do if the frame was theirs will probably just confuse the matter more :) so, to add to the confusion, if you like restoring bikes then get it fixed, doesnt cost that much compared to new top end frames, and the frame will have more of a story to it. If you cant be bothered then spend the money on another, there are plenty that come up for sale on here and elsewhere. You can then give the frame to someone on here and let them do the work, you get to see it again then, only looking new :)
