8 speed chainrings with 9 speed chain

Really? Never heard that one before. However, Googling for that phrase produces some results involving bodily positions that mermaids would certainly struggle to achieve!

I'm in the process of testing the same. I will move to 9 speed at the back (just to get the 36t cassette as climbing is getting hard pulling my kid on the trailer) but I want to keep my square taper BB and it's harder to find 9 speed cranksets with square taper standard. Shimano has moved most to hollowtech or Octalink, and other brands are not as good or more expensive...

Sheldon Brown says it will work mostly fine, and if he says so, I believe him.
