I've got a chrome chromoly (not aluminium) GT that I've had for a while and I haven't been able to ID the model or year from catalogues etc.
It's got a U brake and a internal rear brake cable, so it's from the late eighties or early nineties. This is about as far as I've got with it.
Any ideas?

Yeah, the decals are from 1994, but with the U brake it tops out at 1992, and the internal cable, 1991? and triple triangle makes it 1988-ish? or later.
Also it looks like a chrome finish... tht doesn't necessarily mean it's a chromoly frame (although it probably is, lots of GT's were chromoly, but only a few chromed and usually pre 1990)

^ yeah no, I meant (just from the not very good pictures) the [dulled] finish looked a lot like an early Ti xizang [that hadn't been polished for a while], 1990. Not saying it was and the welds would suggest not (and difinately not an original 89 xizang like you linked).
The "T" in the serial number, old Timberline?

Its probably long forgotten that steel xixangs ever existed!

There's few (very few) around, there was one on ebay a while ago and I think GM has one now (or maybe one and the one off ebay...
