Do Shimano freewheels use the same spline pattern / configuration as the cassettes, such that you can use the same tool?

The wheel I have has a solid axle so I’ll need to remove it to get to the splines so I thought I’d check here before getting grubby :)

Re:

The UG tool is used for Shimano freewheels. It's fractionally smaller than the HG tool used for cassette lockrings. Why? Random history.

Some other makes of freewheel will accept the HG tool.

Re:

Ahhhh. Thanks for the info.

Only the smallest sprocket was worn out so I’ve set the the derailleur limit stops to prevent shifting into it - problem solved! The bike was only £6.50 so buying a new tool and parts seems pointless.

And if you do decide to buy a new tool (they are handy) make sure its a decent one as the cheapies tend to crack in two.

I am now up to 5 different freewheel tools due to the multitude of weird and interesting tat that enters the LGF compound.

*with plenty more to buy and collect!
