Cannondale dropout puzzle

This is one I wrestled with for a while.Basically the starting point is dropout width, which on 1990/1991 frames was 4.67mm.After that there was reputed to be a 1991 only hanger which had a different hole spacing to 1990 hangers but was still 4.67mm.On 1990 frames the two fixing holes c-c was 15.49 and for 1991 the c-c was 14.33.If you fit the wrong hanger it won't sit right in the frame.

At this point it gets interesting.I had two standard frames, both with 1991 colour schemes, but according to the frame numbers both were made in October 1990.These took the pre 1991 hanger.I also had a Beast made in April 1991 which also had the 1990 hanger.Go figure.I did not actually see a 1991 hanger until I bought a random complete bike for parts stripping off eBay,which was made sometime after the Beast.

I think there are several ways around this. The shape of the hanger is the same and the hole spacing seems fairly random to me so why not drill two fresh holes through hanger and dropout and tap the dropout to take 2.5mm or 3.00mm screws.

I dont know which hanger you got from Qwerty but if you actually need a 1991 hanger then I think the D72 hanger from gearmech01 on eBay has the 14.33 spacing which is for 1991 only.Because the difference in c-c is so small then accurate measurement is required.By memory I also think the early hanger comes with 2.5mm screws, while the 1991 hanger has 3.00mm screws.

After 1991 the dropout width increased.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks Mr F
