Black spokes - when did they become common?

I'm working on a '98 Klein Mantra Race. Its a Koi frame, with black singarm and "decals" as well as black bars/stem and originally rims. I have a set of black WTB greaseguard hubs that I'm considering building into a wheelset for the bike, probably with black Sun CR-18 rims.

I think that black spokes would look really good, but I'm trying to decide whether they'd be period correct or not...

So, black or silver spokes for a '98 build?

They were certainly common by 2001-2002, so not a massive leap to suggest they were around in 1998

I had a 1998 G.T sts 1500 ds from new, and that had black spokes. I know for sure because I hate black spokes and I rebuilt the wheels with silver ones.

My 98 stumpy m2 had black spokes and still has. Look so good. Got some DT swiss off fleabay for £13. :D

Re:

Houston, we have a problem!

Front hub is 28 hole.

So I need a 28H front rim, and 28H rear. Both in black rim brake. A quick look on ebay doesn't look promising!

There's a WTB 32H front hub for $50, but it looks like a polished black finish, and my set (rear) is bead blast black. :|

Leaning towards CR18s with silver XT hubs that I have on hand...

They came fitted to a new 97 Klein Attitude Comp I picked up. I got rid of the bike and agree black spokes just dont do it.
