Hi All

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Should this post be re named to show '1995 Answer Manitou Magnum 4 Forks' ?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A post for all things related to the 1995 Answer Manitou Magnum fork. I've yet to see a dedicated post so can you show us your forks and tell us all about them.

How you serviced them, where you got the spare parts and your top tips etc etc.

Can you also list any links to service documents etc. I'll collate them as best as I can at the top of the page in a month or so.

Catalogue here: http://www.mtb-kataloge.de/Bikekataloge ... nituo4.pdf

Re:

I'll drop in the first post to start things off.

I have a pair of these and I want to replace the old and knackered red elastomers. I know you can buy then from 'Suspension Fork Parts' online, see link below.

Website: https://www.suspensionforkparts.net

Elastomer Kit Link: https://www.suspensionforkparts.net/esh ... h-kit.html $54

I'll also need to buy:

Seals: https://www.suspensionforkparts.net/esh ... -seal.html $20

And pay $17.75 for shipping from the US.

That's a total of: $91.75 or £73.92.

That's a lot of money for an elastomer upgrade, don't you think.

I know Longun (Chris) mentioned some time ago that he was looking for an alternative elastomer product which might do the job so come on you 'orrible lot, let's all chip in and try to find a cheaper way of doing this.

Re:

You can buy "elastomer" material (Polyurethane tube or rod) relatively easily, however getting the correct Shore rating (the bounciness) is more difficult. Stock is usually 90 which is way too hard for forks. It usually means getting a custom run done which if you only need 20" of the stuff works out really expensive. I have looked into it and the overall prices compared to getting some from sus fork parts in the end. There is also the added hassle of having to cut the stuff to size which again is a nightmare without specialist tooling.

Re:

This should turn out to be a useful thread as there is often fork related threads jumping up for answer, rock shox and even rear suspension issues.

Right now I have no clinical input (will follow up). But, I have on few occasions built my own stacks and modeled my own recoil rates.

Done by robbing elastomer and springs from other forks. With a few principles acknowledged such as OEM stack height, I mess around until I get a good bounce.

I will explain further in good time. In the meantime, get hunting for those RST, suntour and other forks that will give up their treasure on a six pence.

I'm rebuilding a pair of Manitou 2s currently and to avoid the expense of getting proper elastomers I ordered a length of poly rod from Amazon. I believe it's the shore 90 stuff and I knew would be too hard but for £6 including shipping it's worth experimenting with.
Once I've chopped it into elastomers and somehow put the centre hole through it I'm going to attempt putting holes through the sides to see if it that alters their properties in any beneficial way. I will report back to this thread but the rod won't be here for a month or so yet.
In the mean time I've got badly corroded stanchions to deal with

Re:

It's a few years since I re-built the Magnums in the photos in your first post. As I recall, the chap I did them for provided the elastomers (from the US 'site) and I basically took the fork apart, cleaned it all up and re-assembled with the new elastomers; wasn't too tricky iirc :)

Cheers

ps. where did you find my pics?...did I do a rebuild thread?

Hi :)

I did a google search and your Photobucket pictures popped up in the results, I simply downloaded them and added them to my photobucket. Thanks for offering them up. I would have taken pictures of mine but they're in pieces, some in the shed, some in my loft and the lowers are in front of me at my home office desk hehe.

They're such a nice looking set of forks that I just have to re build them, whatever the cost.

Ah yes, I forget how many pics are uploaded there!

Have fun doing yours :)

Cheers

Re:

That reminds me I have a set (they're all similar) in a box somewhere. Must find which box, got them before I moved and didn't get time to play with them other than clean them up and remove the goo n stuff.

I'll probably put springs in mine or some Quadra/Indy elastomer.

What diameter are the elastomers, what is the diameter of the plastic bit. And what is the unused stack height and the minimum 'worn' stack height ?
