Which Headset for my Retro Mtb come Adventure Cycle Tourer??

Re:

I've always found cartridge bearing headsets to last longer than the type with loose or caged ball bearings. Admittedly, I've never had top end Campagnolo or Shimano headsets with ball bearings, but a fair number of Tange and Stronglight over the years and they would all eventually start to "index", where the balls wear into the races and would make the steering notchy.

I've never yet had this issue with a cartridge bearing type headset, even the cheap Rabid headset I picked up on Ebay for £8.00 is as smooth as the day I fitted it a couple of years and a fair few miles ago.

Re:

Raleigh Yukon as in the red and yellow jobbie with 200gs on it?

What's up with the headset on it at the minute?

Re:

M Part make a nice threaded headset: http://www.wheelies.co.uk/p45206/M-Part ... adset.aspx for which spare bearings are available: http://www.wheelies.co.uk/p45211/M-Part ... rings.aspx

You may find you can buy the bearings for less at a bearing supplier:

http://mbbearings.co.uk/catalog/index.p ... p;cPath=46

However, I'm not sure you'll actually need to take spares. Would it not be possible to leave some spares with someone in the UK, labelled if they aren't bike savvy, so that they can post them out to you in an emergency?

Re:

Okay great!!

That'll be a good choice then you reckon? Seems more affordable, and it has a low stack height of 27mm - YES! There's no problem with building up a stack height a few mm higher up to 33mm with spacers is there?

Thanks for the extra tip on the cheaper bearings as well! How can I tell which ones I need though, it doesn't seem to say!

Cheers

Re:

Oh sorry, didn't see your point about spares...I guess when you need them, you really need em right? and it's not exactly heavy to carry a couple of rings of metal...I don't know what do you think? Do you think it's unlikely that they will wear out at some point on a 15,000 mile trip, a lot of which will be on rough terrain?

I don't know how sturdy headset bearings are really, I've had a few freak out on me, but they've always been second hand so I have no idea how much of a beating they've had!

Re:

and it has a low stack height of 27mm

I would take that with a pinch of salt, it's the same as the details for the threadless version, which makes me think that it's probably wrong. :?

I've no idea if it will last 15,000 miles. On a journey of that distance, sods law is bound to come into effect at some point, so if you have spare bearings, they won't fail, but you'll snap a crank.

Re:

Haha, yeah hopefully no cranks will snap! But you can only prepare for what you can prepare for I guess!

I saw the 1 1/8 xc pro headset on ebay, I was wondering if it was worth buying a second hand headset that's cup and cone, wont the cup be slightly worn out? Or will it totally depend and if it has been well maintained it should have no wear?
