November 18th, 2009

Yeti C-26 retrobike coolwall
Looks like the latest coollwall vote is over already. The Yeti C-26 has been voted cool. The Yeti now joins the likes of Kona on the ‘cool’ side of the coolwall.

So what next? Something which may divide opinion a little more. Our next vote is on GT Bicycles. Purveyors of the triple Triangle and of course long time sponsors of Hans ‘No Way’ Rey amongst other noteables. Should be an interesting vote hopefully, get involved here.

If you’ve any feedback please leave it here. If you’d like to use the old template (I know you all fear change) or any of the other templates guidance for that can be found here.

COOL WALL is back!

November 14th, 2009

retrobike coolwallThought it was time to bring back the retrobike cool wall .

Every month or so we will take a vote on a bike, component, style, rider, whatever. You the people of retrobike will have to decide if the article is cool or not. This will then be recorded for ever on THE RETROBIKE COOL WALL.

Previoulsy we have decided purple, kona(!), proflex(!!), manitou and fluo paint is cool.
Biopace, gripshift and etto helmets have been judged uncool.

First vote is fairly topical, check it out here!

Will return to running a monthly poll for as long as inspiration and enthusiasm lasts.

November 3rd, 2009

The October 2009 edition on Bike of The Month was perhaps the most varied and strongest contest to date. After some exceedingly close voting Onescnark’s super clean Grove Innovations Titanium took a very well deserved victory.

Exclusive Retrobike ‘Ride Out’ Competition

October 20th, 2009

Retrobike sticker at largeTo promote the ‘Rides, Meets, Events and Races’ forum of Retrobike and thus encourage more members to take part in the rides, Mark ‘Sinnett177′ has put together this rather unique competition where you have the chance to loan Adrian Timmis’ Team Raleigh Dyna-Tech for the day at a choice of events. The winner will also receive a retrobike t-shirt, hat and stickers. The winner of the competition will get to choose between two events in which to claim their prize:

The North West Area Ride of Farleton Fell and the Lonsdale Valley on November 21st

Take Adrians’ Ride from last year at the Annual Cannock Turkey Twizzler on December 27th

So, here’s what you need to do to enter, simply stick the Retrobike logo in the most unusual of places and get a picture of it. Either by sticking a Retrobike sticker to something, getting the Retrobike logo displayed somewhere on the internet/TV or by getting the logo in print somewhere. Entries close at 2000hrs Wednesday 11th of November, a BoTM style vote will then decide the winner. Please keep entries clean and above all keep it legal. Best of luck and please submit your entries on this thread.

Can old steel cut in in the high mountains?

October 19th, 2009

“Can old steel cut in in the high mountains? Yes it can!”

Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra
EdEdwards climbs the Col du Telegraphe on his Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra

It’s a question that’s featured in a couple of magazines in recent months, road and off road – can older generation bikes still cut it? The reports have been both scientific (based on PowerTap readings etc.) and more on feel, and an interesting enough read although with the unsurprising conclusion that newer technology was better. I wasn’t in a position to dispute this, but on a personal level, could a 42 year old on an 18 year old bike cut it on the classic Tour de France climbs in the Alps?

The bike was an Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra in 7-11 team colours with the original Shimano 600 groupset; the only modifications were an alloy compact chainset and a larger cassette (interestingly the short cage 600 rear mech was in theory unable to cope with the bigger rear cogs but did so comfortably in practice). Lengthy quill stem and no indexing, off I set.

My super subjective conclusions? It was a cracking week, the bike didn’t let me down at all bar a hamfisted overtightening of a seatpost binder bolt, easily solved. I covered Alpe d’Huez three times, Col du Glandon, Col de Croix de Fer, Les Deux Alpes, Col du Telegraphe, Col du Galibier, Col d’Ornons, Col de Serra Alpe. Descending, never my strong point, was no more hairy than for anybody else. Climbing was more about rider than bike. Would I have been faster up and down on a modern bike with indexed shifting? Very possibly. But, modestly, with as much style and swashbuckling elan? Probably not.
